Methodology
This page explains where the data on FinPortal.si comes from, how often we refresh it, which formulas the calculators use, and what assumptions and limitations apply. The goal is that every result can be checked against its source.
Interest-rate data last updated: 27 Oct 2026. A machine-readable freshness summary is available at /data-status.json.
1. What we compare
The comparisons cover four groups of bank products:
We currently track the following banks and savings banks: Addiko Bank, BKS Bank, DBS, Delavska hranilnica, Gorenjska banka, Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, LON, NLB, OTP banka, Primorska hranilnica, Sparkasse, UniCredit Banka Slovenija. Coverage is expanding gradually.
2. Where the data comes from
Interest rates and conditions come exclusively from each bank's publicly available sources: official web pages, PDF rate sheets and public online calculators. In every comparison table the bank name links to the exact source the figure was taken from.
For macroeconomic context (the Macro page) we use: the Bank of Slovenia (px.bsi.si) for monetary financial institution rates, and the ECB Data Portal for EURIBOR and ECB reference exchange rates.
FinPortal.si is an informational portal (an aggregator). All information is based on publicly available data. FinPortal.si is not affiliated with any bank and does not use any financial institution's internal data.
3. How often we refresh
Data is refreshed automatically every morning (typically around 05:00 Central European Time), directly from official bank sources with no manual entry. The English comparison pages show a monthly snapshot taken on the 1st of each month, with the banks' notes translated; the Slovenian pages show the daily data. The process runs as a chain: fetch from the web sources, write to the database, automated quality checks, and only then publish. If a given source is unreachable that day, we keep the last successfully captured value, and the automated checks flag any source that stays unchanged for too long.
Current freshness by group:
- Deposits: 27 Oct 2026 (12 banks).
- Mortgage loans: 27 Oct 2026 (11 banks).
- Consumer and green loans: 27 Oct 2026 (12 banks).
We currently can't refresh the data for: lon (deposits, last data 22 Oct 2026); lon (consumer loans, last data 22 Oct 2026); lon (mortgages, last data 22 Oct 2026). Those rows in the comparisons carry a warning badge and show the last successfully captured rate.
4. How we check correctness
Before every publish the dataset must pass automated gates, split into two tiers:
Blocking - if these fail, publishing stops entirely:
- the total number of interest rates and the number of banks must not fall below an expected level (protection against a mass scraping failure),
- every interest rate must be within sensible bounds, and the computed APR must be plausible (protection against a misparsed fee),
- a whole product group must not disappear, and several sources must not fail at the same time,
- no bank's data may be older than 21 days - at that point we pull it until it is fixed.
Advisory - if a single bank fails (a canary value drifts from its rate sheet, or a source doesn't refresh for a few days) this does not stop the publish: the affected rows keep the last successfully captured rate, marked with a warning badge and its date. That way one broken source doesn't hide or block the fresh data of every other bank.
In addition to the automated gates, we occasionally run a manual cross-check against each bank's own rate sheet and calculator.
5. Formulas
Monthly payment (annuity). The payment is computed with the standard annuity formula: payment = principal × (r × (1 + r)^n) / ((1 + r)^n - 1), where r is the monthly rate (annual nominal rate divided by 12) and n the number of months. At a 0 % rate the payment is the principal divided by the number of months.
Annual percentage rate (APR / EOM). The APR is found by equating the net disbursed loan amount with the sum of all discounted monthly payments; the monthly rate is solved numerically (bisection), and the annual APR follows as APR = (1 + monthly rate)^12 - 1. We include the one-off arrangement fee and the monthly servicing fee where the bank publishes them, as well as the monthly cost of the cheapest current account or package the bank requires for the quoted rate (source: Bank of Slovenia, overview of consumer fees), the same way banks include it in their own APR.
Deposit. The return is computed with compound interest over the chosen term; the net return applies the 25 % tax on interest income.
Borrowing capacity. The highest acceptable monthly payment is estimated from household net income and estimated living costs, and from it the maximum principal for a given rate and term.
The formulas are covered by automated tests.
6. Assumptions and defaults
- Default deposit-comparison view: €10,000, term 12 months, regular offers (special / promotional offers are hidden until you enable them).
- Default mortgage-comparison view: €150,000, term 20 years, fixed rate, loan-to-value (LTV) 75 %, existing-customer status.
- For variable and combined rates we use the EURIBOR value the bank itself publishes (in its rate sheet or calculator), so our rate matches the one the bank shows. Where a bank publishes none, we use the median of the values other banks publish that week (at least two), so every bank is compared with the same, current EURIBOR; only when there are no such values do we use the latest ECB monthly average, which lags the market by a few weeks. The note on each offer says which value was used. The stress test shows the effect of a rise of 1, 2 or 3 percentage points.
- Where a bank does not publish an arrangement fee or a property appraisal cost, the APR may be slightly understated; you can enter your own appraisal estimate.
7. Limitations
All calculations and comparisons are informational and do not constitute financial, legal or tax advice, nor a binding offer. The actual interest rate also depends on the borrower's creditworthiness and the bank's assessment. Promotional offers have an expiry date. Some images and translations on the site may be created partly or wholly with, or with the help of, artificial intelligence. Article header illustrations are from the free unDraw library.
8. Editorial policy
Content on FinPortal.si is produced by researching publicly available sources; the calculators are based on the formulas described in section 5. Every article is editorially reviewed by Žiga Sitar, the founder and editor of the portal. The formal identification of the operator is in the legal notice.
Editorial independence. FinPortal.si is not affiliated with any bank and receives no payment for an offer's position in the comparison tables. The ordering in the comparison tables depends solely on the interest rate or APR and the selected conditions. If a user submits an inquiry, the operator may receive a fee for forwarding it to a bank; this does not affect the displayed data or the ordering. On the gold and silver pages FinPortal.si works with the partner Elementum through its ambassador programme and may receive a commission; links to the partner are marked "Partner" (see section 9).
9. Gold/silver - data source and limitations
For the gold/silver calculator and comparison we use daily gold and silver closing prices (Yahoo Finance via the yfinance library, in US dollars), converted to euros using the ECB's daily reference rate. Data refreshes once a day; since this is a supplementary rather than a core data source for the site, a stale feed does not block publication - it is only logged as a warning.
The historical part of the calculation simulates an actual monthly purchase at that month's real price (not an averaged annual rate); the forward projection uses the range of historical rolling 10-year returns, reduced by the estimated storage-cost/dealer-spread input you enter. This is not investment, tax or financial advice. Gold and silver are volatile assets with no return of their own (unlike a share or a bond); past returns don't guarantee future ones, and the value can also fall significantly.
Links marked "Partner" on these pages lead to the website of our partner Elementum, where users submit an inquiry themselves; the data is received only by Elementum. FinPortal.si works with Elementum as an ambassador and may receive a commission. The partnership does not affect the calculator and comparison results, which are based on market prices of gold and silver - see also the editorial policy above.
