Gold/silver calculator
Simulates regular (monthly) investing into gold or silver as an alternative to a bank deposit or an ETF. The historical part simulates an actual purchase at that month's real price (not an averaged rate), while the forward projection estimates a range of future outcomes from historical returns. This calculator is informational and not investment advice. Numbers use European format (e.g. 1.000 for one thousand, 1,50 for one and a half).

Forward return projection for gold and silver
Gold and silver price
close of 29 October 2026| Metal | per ounce | per gram | Day | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | €3,610 | €116.05 | ▼ 0.8% | ▲ 5.0% |
| Silver | €46.77 | €1.50 | ▼ 2.6% | ▲ 14.1% |
One ounce of gold costs as much as 77 ounces of silver. A higher ratio means silver is cheap relative to gold, a lower one that it is dear.
Exchange price (COMEX close) converted to euros at the ECB rate, without a dealer premium. When you buy, you also pay the dealer's premium - what a purchase costs.
Notes and limitations
- Historical return is computed from real historical prices (yfinance, converted to EUR using the ECB's daily reference rate) - each month simulates a purchase at that month's actual price, not an averaged annual rate.
- The forward projection uses the range of historical rolling 10-year returns (best/average/worst), reduced by the storage-cost input you enter. This illustrates uncertainty, not a forecast.
- Prices don't include a specific dealer's actual buy/sell spread or fees - these vary between providers.
- Past returns don't guarantee future ones. Gold and silver are volatile assets; their value can also fall significantly. This is not investment, tax or financial advice.

How it is calculated
How does the calculator work out regular investing in gold and silver?
Every month the calculator "buys" gold or silver for the chosen amount at the actual price at the end of that month. When the price is low you buy more, when it is high less. At the end of the period it values all the units bought at the latest price and shows what the investment is worth compared with the amount paid in.
Example: €100 a month from October 2016 to September 2026 (120 payments, €12,000 in total)
| Metal | Final value | Gain |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | €28,653 | €16,653 |
| Silver | €34,799 | €22,799 |
The calculation excludes purchase premiums, storage and, for silver, VAT, so the actual result would be somewhat lower. What affects the purchase price is explained in the article on buying investment gold, and gold and silver can be compared with a deposit and an ETF in the investment comparison. Past returns do not guarantee future ones.
