Without a savings account: Delavska hranilnica - No savings account for individuals; money on the personal account earns 0.00%. (bank rate sheet)

How we calculate: yearly interest is gross, for the amount you enter, with the balance unchanged all year. Where the rate depends on the balance we use the band your amount falls in; where it depends on how long each deposit stays on the account we use the first-year rate.
"Each deposit after N days" means every deposit must stay on the account at least that long before you can withdraw it. Only accounts in the regular offer of banks based or with a branch in Slovenia are included. Neobanks (Revolut, Trade Republic, N26, bunq) are compared below. Product names and bank notes are in Slovenian.

Amounts are gross, with the balance unchanged all year. Only savings accounts that are bank deposits are included. Money market funds (Revolut Flexible Cash Funds, the N26 fund) are not deposits and the guarantee does not cover them, so they are left out. For all four, the scheme of the bank's home country guarantees up to €100,000 per person.
You must report an account with a foreign bank to FURS within 8 days of opening it (form DR-Račun). Interest is tax-free up to €1,000 a year, counted together with Slovenian banks. More on the terms, taxes and catches of each bank in Neobanks in Slovenia.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about savings accounts 7

Which savings account pays the most interest?
Currently NLB Varčevalni račun (NLB) at 0.519% a year. Among accounts you can withdraw from at any time, the highest rate is 0.20% (Varčevalni račun Zlata rezerva, LON). At most banks savings accounts pay little, from 0.001% to 0.05%.
What is the difference between a savings account and a term deposit?
Money on a savings account is not locked: you add to it at any time and withdraw it at once or after a few days, depending on the bank. With a term deposit you lock the money for an agreed period and usually get a higher rate, but you cannot take it out early without losing interest. A savings account suits a reserve you may need soon; a deposit suits money you will not need for months or years.
Are savings accounts protected?
Yes. Deposits on savings accounts are guaranteed up to €100,000 per person per bank, together with your other deposits at the same bank. Banks based in Slovenia are covered by the Slovenian deposit guarantee scheme; BKS Bank, a branch of an Austrian bank, is covered by the Austrian scheme for the same amount.
Do neobanks pay more interest on savings?
Often, yes. Among the foreign online banks we compare, for €10,000 and leaving out new-customer offers, the most is currently left with Trade Republic (base rate): €250 a year after the plan fee. At some neobanks the higher rate comes only with a paid plan that can cost more than the interest it brings. Deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 by the scheme of the bank's home country, and you must report the account to FURS within 8 days.
Do I have to declare the interest?
Interest on bank deposits is subject to Slovenian income tax only if your total from all banks exceeds €1,000 in a year. In that case you file a return by 28 February for the previous year. Banks send a summary of paid interest by the end of January.
Where does the data come from?
From the official interest-rate sheets and product pages of each bank. Only accounts in the regular offer are included. We check the data by hand; the date of the last check is shown next to the title.
Is this comparison financial advice?
No. The comparison is for information only. Banks can change their rates, so check with the bank before opening an account.
