A green loan is a loan a bank grants for an investment in energy efficiency or cleaner transport, such as a heat pump, solar panels, facade renovation or an electric car. Because the bank knows what the money is for, it offers a lower interest rate than on a regular loan. In October 2026 green consumer loans from Slovenian banks started at 3.80% fixed and green mortgages at 2.90% fixed. For larger environmental investments in a house, the Eko sklad loan at 1.2% is often cheaper still.
You can see current offers from all banks and Eko sklad in one place in the green loan comparison, refreshed daily.
What can you get a green loan for?
Banks mostly treat investments that cut energy use or emissions as green:
- a heat pump, biomass boiler or connection to district heating,
- solar panels and battery storage,
- facade and roof insulation, new windows and doors,
- ventilation with heat recovery,
- an electric car,
- buying or building an energy-efficient house or flat (with a green mortgage).
The list differs slightly between banks. Some tie the green consumer loan to purchases from their partners, others accept any quote for a green investment. Before you choose a contractor, ask the bank whether your investment counts as green.
Green consumer loan or green mortgage?
There are two kinds of green loan, and they differ mainly in how they are secured.
A green consumer loan has no mortgage. It suits smaller investments such as a heat pump or solar panels, usually up to a few tens of thousands of euros and up to seven years, with some banks up to ten. In October 2026 fixed rates ranged from 3.80% to 5.45%.
A green mortgage is secured on the property. You use it to buy, build or fully renovate an energy-efficient home, for larger amounts and terms of up to 30 years. Fixed rates ranged from 2.90% to 3.75%. Mortgages in general are covered in the article on home loans in 2026.
How much cheaper is a green loan?
The discount is not large, but it shows on bigger amounts. In October 2026 a green consumer loan was 0.1 to 0.9 percentage points cheaper than the same bank’s best regular consumer loan. Some banks also charge no arrangement or account fee on the green loan, which widens the gap.
For mortgages the gap is smaller, mostly 0.1 to 0.3 percentage points. At two banks the best regular fixed mortgage was even slightly cheaper than the green one, because they apply under different conditions (package, insurance, share of own funds). A green label alone does not guarantee the lowest price. Compare the APR, which includes the costs.
Example: a €15,000 heat pump
Maja and Žan want to fit a heat pump in their house. The quote is €15,000, which they would repay over five years. They compare a green consumer loan at 4.49% with a regular consumer loan at 5.40% at the same bank, both with no arrangement fee.
| Green loan | Regular loan | |
|---|---|---|
| Interest rate (fixed) | 4.49% | 5.40% |
| Monthly payment | €279.58 | €285.83 |
| Total interest | €1,775 | €2,150 |
With the green loan they pay about €375 less interest. The monthly payment is only just over €6 lower, so on smaller amounts it is the total cost that is worth comparing. Work out your own case in the loan calculator.
Example: a €150,000 energy-efficient house
On a €150,000 mortgage over 20 years, the difference between 3.20% and 3.50% fixed means a payment of €846.99 instead of €869.94. Over 20 years that is about €5,500 less interest. On large amounts and long terms, even 0.3 percentage points is worth a little extra paperwork.
What do you need for a green loan?
The bank needs to see that the money really goes to a green purpose. You usually need:
- a quote or contract with the contractor, and the invoice once the work is done,
- for a green mortgage, proof of the property’s energy efficiency, such as an energy performance certificate or project documentation,
- the same documents as for any loan: proof of income and ID.
The bank also checks your credit capacity, just as for a regular loan. A green purpose does not raise the maximum payment you can get. Some green offers are only for customers whose salary is paid into an account at the bank, or require life insurance. Compare these conditions before deciding, as extra insurance can cancel out the lower rate. More in the article on hidden loan costs.
Bank or Eko sklad?
Eko sklad lends to individuals for environmental investments at a fixed 1.2%, far below bank green loans. On €30,000 over ten years you repay about €4,800 less with an Eko sklad loan than with the best bank green loan. The trade-off is a longer process, and the money goes straight to the contractor.
A bank green loan makes sense mainly when:
- you need a smaller amount over a shorter term, where the gap to Eko sklad is small,
- Eko sklad does not support the investment or the public call is closed,
- you are buying or building a home and need more than €100,000,
- you want the money quickly without waiting for the fund’s approval.
All terms, costs and calculations are in the article on the Eko sklad loan. On larger projects you can also combine both loans.
What to watch out for
- Compare the APR, not just the rate. A fee-free green loan with a slightly higher rate can be cheaper than one with a lower rate and a high arrangement fee.
- Check that your investment counts as green. If the bank does not accept the purpose, you get a regular loan at a higher rate.
- Do not buy pricier equipment just for the loan. The rate difference will not make up for a more expensive contractor. Compare quotes for the investment itself first.
- Check subsidies too. For many measures Eko sklad also offers grants, which can reduce how much you need to borrow.
Conclusion
A green loan is a regular loan with a lower rate for energy-efficiency investments. In October 2026 it was up to 0.9 percentage points cheaper at the same bank, and some banks charged no arrangement fee. For larger investments in a house, check the Eko sklad loan first; for smaller amounts or buying a home, compare bank offers.
