The start of October brought more interest rate changes than the whole of September. In short:
- Deposits: BKS Bank raised its 12-month deposit from 1.30% to 2.50% and now has the highest regular rate among 12 banks. The gap between the best and the worst offer on €10,000 is €180 of interest a year.
- Variable-rate loans: they got more expensive at almost every bank because EURIBOR went up. On a €150,000 mortgage over 20 years, the average monthly instalment is about €16 higher.
- The exception: BKS Bank cut its margin on variable-rate mortgages, so its loan is cheaper than in September.
The figures are for new contracts. Offers change, so check the current ones in the deposit comparison, mortgage comparison and consumer loan comparison.
Deposits: BKS Bank almost doubles its rate
Below is the highest regular rate for a 12-month deposit at each bank, without promotional offers.

| BKS Bank | 1.30% | 2.50% |
| Addiko Bank | 1.55% | 1.70% |
| Primorska hranilnica Vipava | 1.60% | 1.60% |
| OTP banka | 1.50% | 1.50% |
| LON | 1.45% | 1.45% |
| Intesa Sanpaolo Bank | 1.40% | 1.40% |
| Delavska hranilnica | 1.30% | 1.30% |
| DBS | 1.20% | 1.20% |
| Sparkasse | 1.10% | 1.10% |
| UniCredit Banka Slovenija | 1.10% | 1.10% |
| Gorenjska banka | 0.90% | 0.90% |
| NLB | 0.60% | 0.70% |
On 1 October BKS Bank raised all its shorter deposits: 6 months from 1.20% to 2.30%, 12 months from 1.30% to 2.50% and 24 months from 1.70% to 2.60%. The minimum is €1,000, and the rate is fixed for the whole term. Addiko Bank raised its 12-month deposit in mid-September, and NLB added 0.10 percentage points on 1 October.
The average rate for a 12-month deposit across 12 banks therefore rose from 1.25% to 1.37%. The gap between banks is still large: on €10,000 you earn €250 of interest in a year at BKS Bank and €70 at NLB. You can work out your own amount with the deposit calculator, and what to look out for is explained in the article on the best deposit. Deposits up to €100,000 are guaranteed at all these banks. BKS Bank is a branch of an Austrian bank, so its deposits are covered by the Austrian deposit guarantee scheme. More in the article on the deposit guarantee.
Mortgages: fixed rates almost unchanged, variable rates up
We compare the lowest regular rate for a 20-year mortgage financing up to 80% of the property value, for a customer whose salary is paid into an account at the bank.
Fixed rates for 20 years changed at only two banks. UniCredit Banka Slovenija raised its rate from 3.35% to 3.55% in mid-September, and OTP banka from 3.70% to 3.80% on 1 October. Intesa Sanpaolo Bank is still the cheapest at 3.45%, and the average of the eight banks with a 20-year fixed offer is 3.81%. Delavska hranilnica raised its fixed rate for loans of up to 10 years from 2.90% to 3.10% on 1 October; longer terms are unchanged.
Only four banks offer a fixed rate for 25 or 30 years. Of those, OTP banka is the most expensive at 4.15% for 30 years, followed by NLB at 4.00%, UniCredit Banka Slovenija at 3.95% and Intesa Sanpaolo Bank at 3.75%.
Variable rates are EURIBOR plus the bank’s margin. 6-month EURIBOR rose in September: its monthly average went from 2.71% to 2.92%, and the daily value, which some banks publish themselves, was around 3.10% on 1 October. Banks that use the monthly average therefore raised their rates by 0.21 percentage points, and those using the daily value by about 0.4.
| Bank | 6 Sep 2026 | 1 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Intesa Sanpaolo Bank | 3.76% | 3.76% |
| BKS Bank | 4.21% | 3.80% |
| OTP banka | 3.76% | 3.87% |
| LON | 3.81% | 4.02% |
| UniCredit Banka Slovenija | 3.81% | 4.27% |
| Sparkasse | 3.96% | 4.35% |
| DBS | 4.16% | 4.37% |
| Primorska hranilnica Vipava | 4.16% | 4.37% |
| NLB | 4.01% | 4.40% |
| Gorenjska banka | 4.31% | 4.70% |
| Delavska hranilnica | 4.81% | 5.02% |
The only bank where a variable-rate mortgage got cheaper is BKS Bank. It cut the margin on its mortgage loan from 1.50% to 0.875% (for terms of 10 to 20 years), more than offsetting the rise in EURIBOR. Intesa Sanpaolo Bank still uses the EURIBOR from the start of September, so its rate is likely to rise at its next update too.
The average of 11 banks (Addiko Bank does not offer housing loans) rose from 4.07% to 4.27%. On a €150,000 loan over 20 years that means a monthly instalment about €16 higher, and about €27 higher at NLB. At BKS Bank the instalment on the same loan is about €32 lower than at the start of September. You can check your own instalment with the loan calculator.
At most banks the fixed rate is now lower than the variable one. What that means for your choice is explained in the articles on EURIBOR in 2026, why rates rise with EURIBOR and the combined interest rate, which is fixed for the first few years.
Consumer loans: Addiko and OTP cost more
For a 5-year fixed-rate consumer loan, two banks raised their rates. Addiko Bank raised the headline rate on its cash loan from 4.95% to 5.45%, and OTP banka added 0.15 percentage points to every tier of its Kredit Naprej. Primorska hranilnica Vipava is still the cheapest at 4.40%, followed by Delavska hranilnica at 4.80% and LON at 4.90%. The highest is at Sparkasse, 5.90%.
Variable-rate consumer loans, offered by seven banks, rose by 0.2 to 0.46 percentage points at six banks because of EURIBOR, and by 0.05 at Intesa Sanpaolo Bank. The average went from 6.08% to 6.35%, so for a consumer loan a fixed rate is usually the better choice. Banks also differ in approval and administration fees, so compare the annual percentage rate (APR) in the consumer loan comparison or work it out with the APR calculator.
What it means for you
- If you have savings on deposit, check what you will earn at your next renewal. The gap between banks is bigger than in September and adds up quickly on larger amounts.
- If you are looking for a mortgage, compare fixed and variable offers at several banks. A variable rate is no longer cheaper, with few exceptions.
- If you already have a variable-rate loan, your instalment will probably rise at the next rate reset set by your contract.
How we collected the data
FinPortal.si collects interest rates every day from the official price lists and websites of 12 Slovenian banks and savings banks. For this review we compared 6 September 2026, when we started keeping a daily history, with 1 October 2026. Each bank is represented by its lowest regular rate for the same scenario, without promotional offers. We checked every change against the banks’ price lists. The details are on the methodology page.
We will publish this review every month. This article is for information only and is not financial advice. Rates can change, so check the bank’s current offer before you decide.
